I might be embarassing myself…

…but I’m going to come right out and say it:

I LOVE cheesy movies.

I mean, seriously, the cheesier, the better; the more convoluted and unbelieveable the plotline, the better; the more horribly stilted and forced the acting, the better.

I have no idea what it is that draws me to these kinds of movies. The only thing I can come up with is that a cheesy movie is like a car accident. You know you shouldn’t watch, but you just can’t tear your eyes away for even a second. I mean, I even buy cheesy movies. Forget just watching, I want to endure the torture over and over again for my pure delight. Cheesy movies just make me feel inexplicably happy.

Currently, while writing this, I’m watching ‘Sleepover,’ a coming of age story of a girl and her three friends on the brink of womanhood and high school who, while having a sleepover, learn about love, life, friendship, and self-esteem…and at the same time participating in a photo scavenger against the cool girls for the right to the high school lunch spot. It’s utterly awkward and painful to watch and that’s why I love it.

Movie genres that make it into my cheesy movie collection:

~pre-teen/ junior high girl plots. I can only laugh at how awkward every facet of these movies are. But, hey, I went through that awkward period too, so I’m entitled.

~the sci-fi/action combo. A total of ten lines in the midst of an intricate plot really makes for a great combo, especially when those ten lines are horrifically delivered.

~ABC Family/Disney movies. They’re usually so wholesome and cutesy cute that I can’t help but love them.

~Hallmark/Lifetime/We…movies. Okay, any made for tv movie fits the bill. Can’t go wrong when women embrace and resolve real-life issues in less than two hours.

~Musicals. I really love musicals and no dissing meant, but what could be any more cheesy than just spontaneously breaking out into song & dance at key moments in the plot. And last, but not least…

~Mediocre romantic comedies. Enough said really.

My Top Five List

*The Chronicles of Riddick

*From Justin to Kelly

*Center Stage

*This Time Around

Death Race 2000- A corny, violent (with the most fake looking blood I’ve ever seen) film featuring David Carridine and Sylvester Stallone (in his first non-porn role) racing throughout the country while trying to hit as many pedestrians as they can.

They Live- Rowdy Roddy Piper takes on an alien race that disguise themselves as the wealthy. Features a ten minute fight scene over a pair of sunglasses.

Kermit’s Swamp Years- Kermit the Frog reflects on the first time he left the swamp with his friends…which is weird because the title suggests the movie would take place in the swamp the whole movie.

Leprechaun in the Hood- The murderous Irish myth takes on the homeboys and raps.

Reefer Madness- A propaganda film from the 1930’s explaining the horrors of marijuana use with thirty year old actors playing teenagers and dope fiends committing psychopathic murder.

Plan 9 from Outer Space- AFI’s Voted Worst Movie Ever Made.

Tremors 1-3- Movie featuring man vs. giant sandworms.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians-……no explanation needed.

It- Based on the Stephen King book, friends try to kill a murderous clown that terrorized them as kids.

Masters of the Universe: The Movie- He-Man was never so awful. Also stars Courtney Cox.

    Breakfast Club- I love this flick…but c’mon.

Red Dawn- Patrick Swayze and his family fight off Communist invaders. WOLVERINES!

Highlander- There can be only one!

Sidekicks- A boy wants to be a great martial artist like Chuck Norris and meet Chuck Norris…he succeeds.

The Never Ending Story- “SAY MY NAME!”

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey- you know this one.

Howard the Duck- Directed by George Lucas (yes, that George Lucas). An alien duck is transported to earth.

UHF- Weird Al Yankovic runs a TV station.

Karate Kid- You know this one.

Hope you find a few to look up.
