Flashback

So, here it is again, another edition of late night thoughts. It’s currently 1 and I’ve been trying to sleep since 10. I’ve been watching 80’s movies, and I think that they’re really great.  There’s just something about the eighties that is completely weird, yet totally appealing. But one good thing about it is that the movie plots are just the same as the movies now, except they don’t have computers or cells phones to deal with. And personally, the teenagers dress a lot cooler than I think I did when I was in high school.

I really like watching 80’s teen movies, and having watched quite a few, here’s a brief summary. Girl from the wrong side of the tracks falls for boy from the right side of the tracks. Sometimes the gender can change, but it’s not as common. They’re completely into each other, but his friends threaten to shun him if he stays with her, and the pressure is just too much, so he dumps her. But don’t worry folks, she’s strong, and she survives. And in the end, he realizes what a putz he’s been and comes back to her, not caring what anyone else says. And the movie always has to end in a kiss with a popular song playing in the background.

Less known, but just as good, maybe better, are the movies about teenagers cross-dressing for one purpose or another. The crossdresser falls for whomever has become their best friend, and the drama at the end, of course, is the revealing of their true gender. The best friend leaves very hurt and angered, and the crossdresser goes back to their normal life, but completely depressed. The movie ends with the best friend  realizing that they too are in love, any conflict is resolved, and it may or may not end with a kiss. Here’s the kicker. The major kiss comes while they are both seemingly the same sex. People are shocked, and then the identity is revealed. In the end, no one really cares if they kiss as a normal couple. It’s like a moot point actually.

If I had to choose, I’d choose to be the girl from the wrong side of the tracks. They always seem to be fiercely independent, extremely loyal to their friends, and their style is completely rockstar. But I don’t think I’d take the guy back in the end. I mean, who really wants a guy that has no staying power. Anyone who’d be convinced that I was wrong for him because of my geographical and financial status is probably a schmuck anyway, and not worth my time to begin with.
